The author, a Venetian historian and diplomat, acted as Ambassador Extraordinary to Cromwell and later to Louis XIV. He was a close friend of Morosini and undertook his defence when Morosini was accused of having evacuated Crete without orders. Sagredo's history was originally printed in Italian in 1673, and was later translated into several langauges. It is especially detailed in its coverage of the reign of Suleiman the Magnificant. cf. Blackmer 1467.
