COWLEY, ABRAHAM. The Works... The Sixth Edition. London: printed by J. M. for Henry Herringman 1680. Folio, 294 x 184 mm. (11 9/16 x 7 3/8 in.), contemporary English binding, red goatskin over pasteboard, covers tooled in gold to a panel design consisting of an outer fillet border decorated with repeated small floral tools connected by semi-circles, and a double inner panel with floral roll-tools or repeated tools framing a central pointed oval ornament and cornerpieces built up from floral volutes, leafy sprays, tulip and daisy tools, etc., spine gilt in seven compartments, narrow turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, g.e., joints and tail of spine a bit rubbed, some minor wear to corners and board edges, one or two small perforations in covers, expert restorations to inner hinges at head and foot and to upper outer corners, spine slightly faded, modern cloth slipcase; scattered browning and spotting. 5 parts in one, separately paginated, parts 2-4 with separate titles, engraved frontispiece portrait by W. Faithorne. Wing C-6654.
The tools of this attractive Restoration binding are from the shop of a binder provisionally named the "Hussey Mosaic binder" by Howard Nixon (unpublished files), who was active, probably in London, during this period.
