DOYLE, Sir ARTHUR CONAN. Autograph manuscript signed of the autobiographical article "Life on a Greenland Whaler." Greyswood Beeches, Haslemere, n.d. [undoubtedly 1896]. 24 pages, oblong 8vo, essentially quarto sheets separated in half (with some cutting across of parts of letters) with slight variation in height, mostly 168 x 203mm. (6 11/16 x 8in.), in black ink on lined paper with Doyle's customary sparse revisions, each leaf tipped at left edge to a small quarto sheet, bound with portrait in black morocco, gilt-lettered, binding broken. An interesting account by Doyle of his seven month's voyage as a ship's surgeon on an Arctic seas whaler in 1880 (he was age twenty and a third year medical student). The piece first appeared in Strand Magazine, January 1897, and then in McClure's Magazine, March 1897 (the article excerpted from this magazine accompanies the manuscript); it was collected in Memories and Adventures, 1924.
