It is interesting to note that while both al-Basra and al-Kufa, the principal Muslim cities of Iraq, issued Umayyad reform-style dirhams between the years 79 and 82, those from Basra are abundant while Kufa's are rarely encountered. This may be a reflection of Basra's commercial importance while Kufa was more the cultural and religious centre.
