Lot Essay

Barcaglia was renowned for his exceptional talent in depicting the female form in marble. The last vestiges of neo-classicism which influenced his early work were soon replaced by a personal form of verisimilitude. In Amore Accieca Barcaglia imbues this large marble with the crisp attention to detail and the emphasis on movement and technical virtuosity that established his reputation. The sensual swerving contra-posto leads the viewer around and up to the figure of the playful cupid.
