Specialist note

Monet painted three night views of Leicester Square in March 1901 (Wildenstein, nos. 1615-1617) from a window of a small room at The Green Room, a club on the corner of St. Martin's Street. These arrangements, obtained with the assistance of the artists John Singer Sargent and Asher Wertheimer, offered Monet a superb view of the square and the lights of the Empire Theatre. Due to fatigue followed by illness, Monet was unable to explore this subject as fully as he had intended.
