A Silver Plate Yachting Trophy, ca. 1875

The bowl of the trophy is raised on four elongated legs in the form of lions. This is mounted on a secondary base which is raised and stands on four simple feet. The bowl, in the form of a soup tureen, is articulated and is higher at either side and the middle. The trophy is engraved on one side: Joseph Elsworth Compliments of Vice Commodore Garner N.Y.Yacht Club, and on the other: "The race is not to the swift" - Oct. 26, 1875.

Vice Commodore Garner died that year on board his yacht Mohawk when she capsized at anchor with all the sails during a black squall
