cover 1857, 5c Blue on thin white wove (8), clear to ample margins, creases and a tear prior to use, used in combination with United States 12c Black (17), large margins to barely in at left, tied on 1861 Murdock correspondence buff cover to Brooklyn, N.Y., red "HONOLULU-HAWAIIAN ISLANDS MAR 14" c.d.s. of origin indicating that the U.S. postage was not fully prepaid in Honolulu, both stamps tied by clear "San Francisco CAL Apr. 5, 1861" c.d.s. upon arrival, additional "SHIP" "10" h.s. due mark indicating that this was a double rate cover short paid 10c when the stamps were initially affixed by the sender in Honolulu, carried by the ship Yankee which departed Honolulu on March 14th and arrived in San Francisco on April 1st, this was the first mail to arrive from Honolulu after the suspension of the Overland route (via the Butterfield Stage) due to the impending Civil War and was, therefore, sent by ship via Panama, repaired cover tears through the Honolulu pmk. and some cover soiling at top,
