Lot Essay

In 1863 Charnay traveled to Madagascar as part of a French scientific study. Due to political unrest he was limited to travel within the areas in and around the port of Tamatave. However, Charnay managed to record many ethnic types on the island through both his camera and writings which were later included in the journal Le Tour du Monde along with engravings after his photographs. (The Waking Dream, p. 308.)

Another print from this series was sold at Christie's New York, 9 October 1997, lot 124.
