Lot Essay

Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) was appointed as the thirteenth president of the United States upon the death of Zachary Taylor in July 1850. Later in 1852, Fillmore ran against Daniel Webster for his second term in office. Educated as a lawyer, Fillmore was politically active throughout his career including four terms in Congress, Comptroller of New York and Vice-President under Taylor.

Possibly a few years older than the Southworth and Hawes portrait of Fillmore in the collection of National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, this plate captures a similarly distinguished likeness.
