Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the present work may have formed part of the artist's decoration cycle of 1705 at Stoke Edith, near Hereford. Only the bedroom overmantels survived from the fire which destroyed the house in 1927 (see E. Croft-Murray, Decorative Painting in England 1537-1837, I, 1962, pp. 272-3).
