The period between the cessation of the traditional Athenian coinage and the genesis of the New Style, or stephanephori, coinage has long been a topic of debate. A series of Tetradrachms of peculiar style, which combines the type and fabric of the traditional Athenian coinage with various symbols forecasting the conventions of the New Style coinage, has been suggested as the coinage of this interim period. The unusual characteristics of this coinage may be easily accounted for if, as has been proposed, it was conceived as emergency currency during the Macedonian War with Rome. This coin is die linked with an example believed to have been struck during the gap in Athenian coinage of the early 2nd Century BC, and consequently is of great interest and significance.
