Lot Essay
Philippe-Claude Montigny, matre in 1766.
Designed in the Parisian got Grec of the 1760's, this 'Etruscan'-black encrier relates to the oeuvre of Philippe-Claude Montigny. Elected matre in 1766 and described by the Almanach Dauphin in 1777 as un des plus renomm pour les meubles marqueterie en caille, et argent en bne et cuivre dans le genre des ouvrages du clbre Boulle, Montigny is known to have collaborated with the marchand-bniste Ren Dubois on the related group of 'bureaux la Grecque' (see lot 10), upon which this type of encrier would undoubtedly have originally stood.
Four further closely related encriers by Montigny are recorded:- one, from the Fours Collection, with a jewelled frieze, was sold in Paris, 27 June 1935; another, with ornamental arabesque frieze, sold anonymously at Couturier-Nicolay, Paris, 30 November 1978, lot 72, was probably en suite with the bureau plat sold anonymously at Parke Bernet, New York, November 1957; another was sold anonymously at Palais Gallira, Paris, 13 December 1962, lot 220; and a final example was sold anonymously at Christie's London, 12 December 1996, lot 131 (7,475).
