Now mounted as a censer, the deep bowl with a flared rim, the interior enamelled with lotus in a lotus pond at the medallion against a turquoise-ground, decorated around the cavetto with bunches of grapes suspending from vines and issuing vine leaves against a white-ground, the exterior with scrolling lotus bloom above lotus lappets; flanked on either side with a gilt-bronze animal-mask suspending oval loop handles, the waisted foot and mouth rim mounted in gilt-bronze, the elaborate reticulated cover in parcel gilt with scrolling lotus bloom, surmounted by a lotus pod finial

Lot Essay

The attempt at naturalistic rendering of the vine leaves with the use of red, yellow and green shading of the enamels can also be seen on two incense burners, the first dated to second half 15th century, illustrated in Chinese Cloisonne: the Pierre Uldry Collection, no. 35; the other dated to the first half of 16th century, in the Clague collection, illustrated in Chinese Cloisonne, pl. 5.
