Lot Essay

This flask is an excellent example of the effect that could be created by using the intaglio form of decoration on a monochrome porcelain vessel, to create two different shades of green from the same glaze, while simultaneously accentuating the tightly-packed designs.

For a Yongzheng vase of this exact form, decorated in famille rose enamels, cf. the example illustrated by Rosemay Scott, Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, fig. 110 and cover.
