YONGZHENG

The vase with a generous body is raised on a splayed foot, decorated around the waisted neck with a biscuit band of moulded stylised flowers borne on a continuous vine, below a single bow-string before the rolled mouth rim, flanked at either side with sturdy lug-handles, the vase is entirely covered in a glaze with characteristic crackles, except for the biscuit band painted with a brown wash, the base incised with san hao, number three, also covered with a brown wash
10 in. (25.4 cm.) high, box

Lot Essay

The brown wash covering the unglazed band is effective in simulating the colour of bronze metal to further emphasize the theme of archaism. Cf. a similarly decorated square zun vase with archaic bronze design bearing a Yongzheng mark in the Palace Museum collection, Beijing, illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, p. 259, no. 88.
