Lots 190-193, portraits of Charlie Parker, were commissioned by Warner Brothers Records in 1977 for the release of a special boxed edition of rare recordings by Charlie Parker. The records document the early recording sessions known as the "Dial Recordings," which took place in New York and Southern California in 1946 and 1947. The sessions included not only Charlie Parker, but other jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Errol Garner, and Earl Coleman.
Each of the following four works appeared as an album cover in the special boxed edition, which was released in a limited edition of 4000 numbered copies. The four portraits reflect each artist's feelings about Charlie Parker, and show a diverse and personal interpretation of the impact of his music and his persona upon their creative lives.
