Four well-executed water colours of men of the Madras Army c1835-45, three of them being native soldiers (a Sepoy Grenadier of Line Infantry in scarlet coatee with braid loops on the chest, a Gunner of Horse Artillery in blue Full Dress jacket with yellow cord loops, and a Sowar of Light Cavalry in French grey Undress jacket): all three wear the very distinctive bulbous black head-dress peculiar to the Madras Army; the fourth illustration shows a European cavalryman of the same period, in dark blue stable-jacket and scarlet pillbox cap with blue band; all 9in. x 7in. unframed
