Sergeant Evelyn Guy Whiteman, who was born in Sandhurst, Hawkhurst, Kent, and enlisted at Canterbury, was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Marne on 6.9.1914. He was the Regiment's only casualty on that day and was buried in the Land Franco-British National Cemetery at Signy-Signots.
