Honorary Major Alexander Morrison was born in May 1860 and served in the ranks of the Army Medical Department from 1880-96, including postings to Jamaica, Barbados and Hong Kong, in addition to active service in the Suakin operations of 1885. Advanced to Warrant Officer in the latter year and to Quarter-Master and Honorary Lieutenant in January 1900, he served in the Boer War and was present in the operations leading to the relief of Ladysmith. Next posted to Malta, he participated in the international rescue operations mounted at the time of the Messina Earthquake in 1908, received advancement to Honorary Captain in January 1910 and reverted to Retired Pay in April 1914. Re-employed in the Great War, he served with the B.E.F. from 1914-19, was advanced to Honorary Major in August 1917 and twice Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 22.6.1915 and 29.5.1917 refer). Morrison once more reverted to Retired Pay in April 1919.
