Petty Officer 2nd Class Henry Charles Mahon was born in Dublin in August 1848 and was already an experienced mariner when he entered the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. Indus in January 1873. Joining H.M.S. Himalaya in the same Rate in September of the same year, he was present in the Ashantee operations. Advanced to Leading Seaman in April 1875 and to Petty Officer 2nd Class in March 1876, his last regular ship appointment was aboard H.M.S. Warrior, now a major attraction in Portsmouth Dockyard. Mahon next transferred as a Boatman to the Coast Guard and was finally pensioned in October 1892.
