Painted in grisaille and gilt with the equestrian statue of King Dom Jose I from the Praco do Comercio, edged in bands of sea-green enamel and gilt and festooned with floral garlands

Lot Essay

Commemorating the 1775 inauguration of the famous statue, a centerpiece of the French style place royale that had been built under the direction of the Marques de Pombal after Lisbon's 1755 earthquake. Banquets for the city's elite, served on this porcelain, were hosted by King Dom Jos/ae I for the inauguration of hte new square. See D. Howard, Choice of the Private Trader, p. 261
