Each side painted with a knight in landscape leaning against a coat-of-arms for Heath and holding in his left hand a banner repeating the coat, clusters of purple and pink roses on the sides and in the center and borders of floral and gilt husk swags inside and out

Lot Essay

D.S. Howard, op. cit., p. 625 illustrates probably the same bowl, "...purchased privately in 1952 for 50 pounds and later the same year sent to New York", and notes that "This unusual design is both armorial and allegorical and probably copied from a bookplate."
