Lot Essay

A pair of chairs of virtually the same model was sold Sotheby's New York, 28 June 1996, lot 281 ($18,400) having been exhibited in the International Art Treasures Exhibition, Bath, 1973 and The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1974-1975). A variant of this design featuring four oval paterae to the back from the Thursby Pelham collection is illustrated in R.Edwards, ed., The Dictionary of English Furniture, rev.edn., London, 1954, vol.I, p.299, fig.233. While most examples this design were executed in mahogany, a painted triple-back settee is illustrated in C.Claxton Stevens and S.Whittington, Eighteenth Century English Furniture: The Norman Adams Collection, Suffolk, 1983, p.75.
