Lot Essay

Jeanne de Gagne was the daughter of Philibert-Bernard de Gagne, Seigneur de Perrigny, Conseiller du Roi, president of the Parlement de Bourgogne. She married Monsieur Le Goire, Seigneur de Saint-Seine, later president of the Parlement de Bourgogne.

The portrait -- which bears a label on the verso of the relining canvas that reads 'peint par N de Largilliere (on back of original canvas)' -- can be dated to circa 1715-20 by the soft, powdery manner of its handling and the style of the sitter's costume.
