Lot Essay

A pupil of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, Fontenay faithfully followed his master's tradition of painting ostentatious floral compositions. The present work is similar to a Bouquet of Flowers on a table in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (R.F. 1956-3) (for illustration, see M. Faré, Le grande siècle de la nature morte en France, 1974, p. 326).
