BICHAT, Marie Franois Xavier (1771-1802). Anatomie Gnrale, Applique la Physiologie et la Mdecine. Paris: Brosson & Gabon, 1801.
4 volumes, 8o (200 x 123 mm). 2 folding letterpress tables. (Occasional light spotting). Contemporary tree calf, spines gilt (joints rubbed, a few very minor repairs). Provenance: Dr Paul Topinard (1830-1912), physical anthropologist and creator of "Topinard's angle" and "Topinard's line" used in anthropometry (library stamp on title-pages).
FIRST EDITION. "Bichat revolutionized descriptive anatomy" (Garrison-Morton-Norman). Doctors had previously thought in terms of diseased whole organs, but Bichat demonstrated that particular tissues within an organ might be diseased, and that different organs were composed of the same sorts of tissues. He was able to identify 21 separate tissue types, including nervous, connective, serous, vascular and mucous tissues, and described them in both healthy and diseased states. Although he worked without a microscope, his studies essentially formed the beginning of modern histology. Cushing B371; Garrison-Morton-Norman 403; Heirs of Hippocrates 1257; Osler 1301; Waller 1027; Wellcome II, 164.
[With]: Pathological Anatomy. The Last Course of Xavier Bichat, from an Autograph Manuscript of P.A. Bclard. Philadelphia: John Grigg, 1827. 8o (215 x 130 mm). (Foxed). Contemporary full brown speckled calf (spine faded, extremities worn). (5)
4 volumes, 8
