BIGELOW, Henry Jacob (1818-1890). Ether and Chloroform; their Discovery and Physiological Effects. Boston: David Clapp, 1848.
Two parts in one, 8o (238 x 150 mm). Original printed tan wrappers, uncut.
VERY RARE FIRST SEPARATE APPEARANCE of Bigelow's advocacy of ether which "assured its adoption throughout the civilized world. The above work deals with the priority claims in general and with a defence of Morton's claim in particular" (Garrison-Morton-Norman). The author's note at the beginning reads: "The author of these pages does not propose to dig up the well-worn hatchet of the ether controversy. It may, therefore, be proper to state that the first part of this pamphlet was published more than six months ago, in a Medical Journal [Boston Medical and Surgical Journal]. The second part was then also written, at their request, for the Surgical Committee of the National Medical Convention; and the appearance of both in this form has been deferred till now, by the necessary delay in the publication of the transactions of that body." FINE COPY. Garrison-Morton-Norman 5730.
