Lot Essay

Born in Paris in 1821, Eugène-Antoine Aizelin (d. 1902) was a pupil of Ramey and Dumont at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He made his debut at the Salon in 1852 exhibiting a plaster model of Sapho. He was awarded a Gold Medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle.
Many Parisian monuments are decorated with his work, including the Louvre, the Opréra, the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Hôtel de Ville.
