In July 1944, Dubuffet made his first attempts at lithography, printing at home on a borrowed press. This affinity for the technique, which he was to make his own, led him to take a three month stage at the Mourlot lithography studios beginning in September 1944. During this period, he worked on the lithographs which were to be assembled as Matière et Mémoire. Coupled with a refinement of technique was his use of handmade Auvergne paper on which the majority of the following proofs are printed. Dubuffet took as his subjects the Parisians around him emerging from the strictures of the Occupation. This set, together with Les Murs, were first shown at the Galerie André in an exhibition held in April, 1945.
