In April 1961, Dubuffet began the extraordinary lithographic Assemblages which were made from Les Phénomènes. The first of twenty such assemblages, Personnage au costume rouge was created, for example, from four cut up Phenomena lithographs in combination with three new plates specifically designed to describe the figure. Amongst the group of Assemblages offered here are four maquettes, which allow an insight into the actual method with which these were produced. There are also sets of progressive proofs which document the actual order in which the various plates were printed. The best known of all of Dubuffet's prints, they introduce a gallery of universal types commenting without words on the human condition on both our foibles and our vulnerability. These lithographs confirm Dubuffet's stature as one of the most important printmakers of the twentieth century.
