The cresting with mirror-plate back below a lambrequin swag canopy, with central carved figure of Mercury flanked to one side with a mother and child and to the other with a soldier, with projecting group of two putti with a sphere (one with missing leg) above a brass dial plate, elaborately engraved with figures and inscribed in Latin, French, English and German, inscribed above MAGNUM BAROMETRUM/TORICELLIANUM APPROBATATUM IN ACADEMIA VIENENET DIVERSIS ALYS, the trunk with foliate and scroll carved sides and also with mirror-plate back, terminating in the figure of a man (lacking hand) with a globe
