Lot Essay

The decoration on the present Coalport service of scenes from German, French and other fables is based on a Meissen prototype circa 1765. At this time, such decoration of landscape scenes within mosaic borders was extremely popular. Cf. Christie's New York upcoming sale of Important French Furniture, European Porcelain and Decorative Arts, May 23, 1995, lot 87 for a Meissen iron-red mosaik-ground service of this date painted with vignettes of shepherds and shepherdesses
