Lot Essay

A number of constructional and decorative features of these elegant chairs could suggest a Dutch rather than an English origin. These are, for instance, the Continental pegged construction and the characteristic scaled decoration of the uprights, which appear on the splats of a group of Dutch chairs illustrated in R. Baarsen, Nederlandse Meubelen 1600-1800, Zwolle, 1993, pp. 82-83.
