Lot Essay

The unusual form of the base with the central baluster and S-scroll supports to each corner, is reminiscent of the library table in the Signet Library, Edinburgh, made in 1822 by Edinburgh cabinet-maker William Trotter. The foliate and heavily gadrooned legs also show Trotter's stylistic influence, demonstrated in particular on his circular rosewood table frame, made for Paxton House in 1814, (F. Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1983, pl. 63 and 69).
