Inlaid with lines and cross-banded overall in laburnam, the serpentine hinged top with panel of a bird perching on a flower with acanthus sprays at the corners, above a shaped apron with conforming marquetry panel, to one side a quarter-veneered panel, to the other a frieze drawer, on cabriole legs, the top reveneered

Lot Essay

This marquetry work-table with its cabriole legs and serpentine apron reflects the French taste of the 1750s and 60s as introduced by the renowned Tottenham Court Road cabinet-maker, Pierre Langlois (d. 1765). It relates to a table by Langlois, also with a hinged top but with an undertier, supplied to Caroline, Lady Holland for Holland House, London (P. Thornton & W. Rieder, 'Pierre Langlois, Ebéniste. Part 4', Connoisseur, April 1972, p. 258, fig. 3). The upper left corner of Langlois' trade card shows a similar small table inlaid with floral marquetry.
This table also bears similarities to a work-table attributed to Langlois, sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 16 April 1998, lot 133.
