Lot Essay
The table has scrolled and fretted trestle ends with projecting balusters in the manner of a tea-table pattern illustrated in Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807 (pl. XXII); while the arched 'claws' relate to his stool pattern (pl. XII). Related baluster-tied trusses feature on writing-tables bearing the stamp or label of the retailer James Winter, while the arched 'claw' appears on another of his writing-tables, with a reversible games board. Winter was established as a furniture retailer in Wardour Street in 1823 (C. Gilbert Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 57 & figs. 1020, 1021 and 1022).
