MATTIOLI, Pietro Andrea (?1500-1577). I Discorsi... nelli sei libri di Pedacio Dioscoridi Anazarbeo della materia medicinale. Hora di nuovo dal suo istesso autore recorretti, & in più di mille luoghi aumentati. Venice: Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1568.

2o (349 x 232 mm). Woodcut portrait of the author at m8v and over 950 woodcut illustrations in text (some browning throughout, approximately fifty leaves with some heavier browning overall, some leaves with unobtrusive marginal paper-tape repairs). 18th-century quarter vellum, marbled boards, spine decorated in gilt and gilt-lettered, speckled edges (edges reinforced with later vellum, soiled, hinges cracking).

Provenance: contemporary ownership signature on title (illegible); Walter Ashburner (stamp on title and last leaf); G.M. Carboni (book label on front pastedown).

Second of the Valgrisi Venice editions with the large woodcuts, and the first Italian vernacular edition so illustrated. The first edition was published in Italian in 1544 and the first Latin edition in 1554. The first Valgrisi edition of 1565 is the first containing Mattioli's fuller notes. That edition, and the present, are most valued for their completeness. The woodcuts of plants by Giorgio Liberale and Wolfgang Meyerpeck are the same used in the New Kreterbuch of 1563 and the animal cuts were additions to the 1565 edition of the Commentarii (see Hunt 94). Adams D-678; Nissen BBI 1304.
