RUIZ LOPEZ, Hipólito (1754-1816) and José PAVON. Florae Peruvianae, et Chilensis prodromus sive novorum generum plantarum Peruvianarum, et Chilensium descriptiones, et icones... editio secunda. Rome: Typographio Paleariniano, 1796.
4o (330 x 235 mm). 37 engraved plates. Modern half calf gilt, grey boards, uncut and partially unopened. Provenance: propaganda fide stamps on title; contemporary manuscript library number written on front endpaper verso.
FINE, UNCUT COPY OF THE UNRECORDED FIRST ISSUE OF THE RARE SECOND EDITION. The first edition of 1794 published, in facing Spanish and Latin text, the botanical discoveries of Ruiz Lopez while leader of a Spanish-French expedition to Peru (which then included present-day Chile). Controversy surrounded the book, as Antonio Cavanilles claimed that he had already described genera that Ruiz and Pavon announced as newly discovered. Release of the text was halted as a result of Cavanilles' complaint shortly after October 1794 and the remainder of the issue was only distributed after June 1796.
The present edition results from a copy "that had reached Italy early in 1795, and came into the hands of Gaspar Xuárez, a botanist residing in Rome, but a native of Tucumán (Argentina). With the permission of Ruiz, Xuárez started the preparation of the new edition of the Prodromus in order to rescue it from oblivion" (Stafleu-Cowan). Corrections and taxonomic and historical notes were added to this Latin-only edition. Stafleu-Cowan notes that this edition "was published in 1797 and is now extremely rare. Sir Joseph Banks's copy (British Museum, Bloomsbury) and the copy at the New York Botanical Garden are among the very few copies known outside Italy." The present issue, however, is unrecorded, as it is dated 1796 and is therefore likely to be the first issue of the second edition. One other copy with this early dated state of the title-page has sold at auction: Christie's East, New York, 5 June 1997.
Nissen BBI 1698; Palau 281371; Pritzel 7894; Sabin 73994; Stafleu-Cowan 9769.
