Lot Essay

It would appear that this cupboard has been copied from the original early 16th century cupboard (or aumbry) in the collection of The Victoria and Albert Museum right down to the smaller detail. The V&A example is illustrated in Victor Chinnery Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge 1979, page 416, fig. 4.10. Of course originally the front stiles would have extended down to feet or even a lower section.
