Lot Essay

In 364 'Adud al-dawla mounted an expedition to Iraq to depose his feckless nephew 'Izz al-dawla. He succeeded in his efforts but enraged his father, Rukn al-dawla who ordered him to leave and restor 'Izz al-dawla to power. While coins are known from Madinat al-Salam (see next lot), none have been recorded from the nearby mint of al-Kufa.
