Triumph of Cupid

The French born artist, Jacques Parmentier, came to England circa 1676-7 and worked as an assistant to various decorative historical painters. He studied under Charles de Lafosse (1636-1716), and was later employed by him at Montagu House, London. In 1694 he was sent to Holland by King William III to assist Daniel Marot in the decoration of the palace of Het Loo. He was active in Yorkshire, from c.1701 to c.1721, mainly as a portraitist, and was a member of the circle of virtuosi at York. Parmentier returned to London on the death of Louis Laguerre in 1721, and continued to work there until his own death in 1730.
