Chinese School, 19th Century

An album of Chinese botanical watercolours of fruit and vegetables. [n.p., n.d. but ?Canton: circa 1830]. Small oblong 2° (231 x 336mm). 8 fine water- and bodycolour drawings of Chinese fruits, some heightening with gum arabic, 7 titled in ink in English at foot of leaf, all on western laid paper. (Two drawings with titles partially erased.) Original printed-patterned paper-covered boards, g.e. (backstrip torn with some loss).

A good collection of chinese botanical studies of fruit. The subjects are:
1.Wompee. Clausena lansium. Titled 'The "Wampee"'.
2.Lychee (heart-shaped). Litchi chinensis. Titled 'The Lee Chee'. 3.Loquat and Asian (Nashi) Pears. Eriobotrya japonica and Pyrus pyrifolia. Titled 'The Locoosee or Loquats'.
4.Oranges. Citrus reticulata. Titled '"Naringee" or Orange'.
5.Grapes and Apple. Vitis vinifera & Malus domestica.Untitled.
6.Star fruit. Averrhoa carambola. (Title partially erased and illegible).
7.Banana fruit and leaf. Musax paradisiaca. Titled 'The Trada or Plaintain'.
8.Water-chestnut. Trapa bicornis. (Title partially erased and illegible).
