The Animal Kingdom arranged in conformity with its organization, by the Baron Cuvier... with additional descriptions of all the species hitherto named, and of many not before noticed, by Edward Griffith.. and others. London: William Clowes & Sons and others for Geo.B. Whittaker, 1827-1835. 16 volumes, 8° (237 x 144mm). 1 folding letterpress table, 799 engraved plates (674 hand-coloured, 12 folding). (Some light spotting, plate 106 in vol.XV misbound to face p.388.) Contemporary brown calf, the covers bordered with a single gilt fillet, the spines in six compartments with raised bands, black morocco lettering-piece in the second, green morocco in the third, the others with horizontal fillets in gilt and blind at head and foot (spines somewhat faded and with occasional light scuffing, some light surface damage to leather of covers). Provenance: Neill Malcolm of Portallloch, Argyll (1769-1837, armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, IN ITS MOST EXPENSIVE STATE: THE MOST ATTRACTIVE AND COMPREHENSIVE EDITION WHICH CAN WELL BE COMPARED WITH THE FAMOUS FRENCH "DISCIPLES EDITION".
According to Lowndes, the work was issued in three forms: royal 8° with uncoloured plates (26l. 8s.), royal 8° with coloured plates (as here) and 4° with plates on India paper (both issues priced at 52l. 10s). The work breaks down into the following sections:
