Lot Essay

Although this painting was not known to George Keyes when he compiled his catalogue raisonné of the artist's work (Cornelis Vroom: Marine and Landscape Artist, 2 vols. 1975), he accepts the painting on the basis of a photograph. It may be compared to several other wooded landscapes by Vroom featuring tall trees with delicate filigreed foliage silhouetted against a low sky: in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin (Inv. no. 888c), Statens Museum, Copenhagen, Inv. no. 223, formerly in the Becker Collection, Dortmund and on loan to the Frans Halsmuseum in Haarlem (respectively, Keyes 1975, nos. P7, P12, P16 and P39).
