Lot Essay

Adriaen van Utrecht had begun painting this type of horizontally composed, tabletop still life with fruit and vegetables by 1635 (see Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, Inv. no. NK2349). The present painting may be compared in style with a Fruit Still Life dated 1647 in the Statens Museum for Konst, Copenhagen (Inv. no. 720). An undated vegetable still life by the artist in the Szepmüvészeti Museum, Budapest (Inv. no. 606), also offers points of comparison.
