Lot Essay
In his monograph of 1984, Ertz records that the primary version of this composition, executed by Jan Brueghel the Elder, called 'Velvet' Brueghel, circa 1606/7, is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (op. cit., p. 428). The present composition, which he once considered to be by 'Velvet' Brueghel is one of several versions with various formats painted by Brueghel, the Younger based on his father's work. In reattributing it to Jan Brueghel, the Younger, he cites its close relationship to the 'Bouquet of Flowers in a Tub' in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Alte Pinakothek, Munich (Inv. no. 824), and dates it to the period just prior to the master's Italian journey, circa 1620.
