PRESIDENT LINCOLN APPOINTS AN ACTING COMMISSIONER OF CUSTOMS

"Thomas Feran, is hereby appointed to discharge the duties of Commissioner of Customs, during the absence of Nathan Sargent, the Commissioner."

Nathan Sargent (1794-1875), a journalist who wrote political articles under the pseudonym "Oliver Oldschool," was an ardent Republican and fervid supporter of President Lincoln. He served as Commissioner of Customs from 1861 until 1871. Not in Collected Works or supplements, and apparently unpublished. A similar interim appointment, replacing the Secretary of Treasury, also in Nicolay's hand, was sold at Christie's, 9 December 1993, lot 200 ($19,550).
