A SOUTH GERMAN POLYCHROME AND PARCEL-GILT NARRATIVE RELIEF
Early 16th Century
Depicting scenes from the life of a male saint, the figures carved in high relief on a rocky background, the left side with a city in the background, the right side with the gates of a city, set on a modern rust colored velvet stand
13in. (33cm.) high, 41½in. (105.5cm.) wide

Lot Essay

This relief was most probably part of an altar or tabernacle as the scenes it seems to depict, the Journey to Emmaus where the disciples Peter and Cleopas met but did not recognize their recently crucified master Christ and the appearance of Christ to his mother Mary in the 40 days between his Crucifixion and Ascension, address the themes of the Resurection and Salvation of the Faithful. This iconographic scheme is difficult to assign with certitude, as some elements from the relief have been moved or may be missing.
