BOOK OF HOURS, use of Rome, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum [Florence, c.1470].
76 x 50mm. 218 leaves with 13 lines written in brown ink in a round gothic bookhand, rubrics in red, one-line initials alternately of red or blue, two- and three-line initials of burnished gold or blue with elaborate and elegant penwork flourishing of lilac or red respectively, ELEVEN HISTORIATED INITIALS five to seven lines with half-length figures of saints and accompanied by three-sided borders with green tendrils with fleshy leaves and flowerheads interspersed with golden disks, FOUR LARGE HISTORIATED INITIALS ACCOMPANIED BY FULL-PAGE BORDERS made up of lush leaves and flowers, pairs of birds and putti, the subjects of the scenes are the Annunciation, with border medallions with half-length prophets and the coat of arms of the original owner, azure, a lion rampant and a star or, the Triumph of Death, with a border medallion of a penitent saint holding a skull, David in penitence, Descent from the Cross, painted in the workshop of Francesco de Antonio del Chierico (slight cropping of outer margins, some spotting and yellowing usually in margins, ink outlining of first illuminated page smudged, lacking at least one folio), 19th-century black leather (upper joint split).
